AbstractFor the greater part of American history there was no federally funded Welfare program The poorest of the poor were aided by private organizations churches and occasionally by small state programs supporting people within their proximity there was no Federal welfare system And the proximity factor made individuals groups and communities more responsible and accessible The aim of this paper is to discuss my main concentration of interest which is the welfare system and the effect it has on society as a whole I will assess the effects of social-welfare policies intended objective to protect the wellbeing of humans and how its unintentional consequences has impacted the public good I discuss for my intended audience whom may be some of my peers interested in social welfare the welfare policies historyHistory of WelfareOctober 29 1929 Black Tuesday occurred the day the stock market crash which reflectively can be seen as the cause of the great depression in the 1930s along with the debt and destruction incurred from World war I These two events created poverty the likes of which the United States had never endured Millions of citizens suffered from hunger and poverty causing turmoil unrest and a considerable amount of crime Simply put people had to feed their families but banks were closing people lost all of their savings and means of income and many resorted to looting and violence to feed and clothe themselves and their children In the United States far too many people live in conditions of poverty or near poverty in 2002 an estimated 121 of all people in the US were considered poor Rank 2005By 1935 the financial crisis peaked but there was no end in sight to the economic malaise The government had little choice but to step in and create a welfare system to protect its citizens from dying and the country from breaking down President Roosevelt signed his
