Stress can be defined as the following the mental or emotional strain that arises from stringent circumstances Many parents wonder why their children come home from school tired and stressed out Parents ask themselves What in school could cause my son or daughter to be stressed Although stress can affect each person differently there are three causes of stress that will eventually take a toll on a student athletes body A heavy workload maintaining a high Grade Point Average and his reputation among the people around himOne of the first main causes of stress for a student athlete is the heavy workload it can be very strenuous and difficult Student athletes go to school for seven hours out of the day When they return home they have to complete homework for at least an additional two hours A typical student athlete can experience three tests two quizzes and a written report all in the same week To achieve a good grade on these assignments he will have to prepare not only the day before but also all week long This may result in not getting an adequate amount of sleep One may not get enough sleep especially if he is participating in an extracurricular activity such as a sport It can become very difficult for a high school student to balance both schoolwork and a sportA second thing that causes stress for a student athlete is maintaining a high Grade Point Average while playing a sport This is a common problem student athletes face Often practice hours take place after school which can easily interfere with a students studying time For example one could have basketball practice from six thirty to eight thirty on a Monday night and have multiple tests and quizzes the following day Once the student athlete comes home from practice he must shower and have dinner By the time he is finished with these things it could be approximately nine
