A successful monarchy relies upon a stable leader who is concerned with the satisfaction of those he rules over Henry Bolingbroke in Shakespeares follows a trend set of his predecessor Richard II self-indulgence and neglect of his kingdom These leaders worry about the possibility of losing their kingdom or their soldiers to other nobles who were also concerned more with obtaining a higher position rather than governing In relation to Kants writing it is noted that people need to be governed by a leader in order to maintain equal justice but there will be corruption amongst the leaders because self-interest eventually arises because the leaders are human and we all have the same natural tendencies to abuse our freedom Clearly it is evident that Shakespeares Richard II is in line with Kants belief In Richard II wars once fought for gaining or protecting land are overshadowed by personal battles fighting for the position of kingIn the readings of Shakespeares The Tragedy of King Richard II it is evident that Richard seized the throne in a deceitful manner after his uncle died he knew the land rightfully belonged to his cousin Henry Bolingbroke However Richard did not have a conscience towards his wrongful behavior Instantly after taken over the throne Richard II was wasteful in his spending habits unwise in his choice of counselors and detached from his country and its common people In order to have a society with justice and order the leader has to be free from corruption and think in regards to what is best for the people in a collective sense Kant p180 Conversely the opposite is being displayed by the actions of Richard Relatively connected Kants writings states The highest master should be just in himself and yet a man p180 Clearly in Shakespeare neither leaders where just in their actions Henry proved himself a powerful and fearless leader when he forcefully overthrew King Richard despite the divine rights
