What specifically is the common good and why has it become such a serious discussion of problems in our society John Rawls defined the common good as certain general conditions that are equal to everyones mutual advantage The primary components of the common good consists of having organizations environments and social systems work in a way that benefits everyone as a whole and no one individually It is shared and beneficial for all involved Rawls theory says rational persons would agree to the theory of the social contract if they were all placed behind a veil of ignorance This situation allows people to know general facts about human society but prevents them from knowing any facts about themselves no one knows his place in society social class position race sex or social status These people are then given the task of choosing principles that will essentially govern their society By using this approach these principles would be a fair advantage to all People wouldnt want to belong to a race or gender that was discriminated against therefore the principles would be adopted opposing discrimination Everyone would benefit from the principles created The common good encompasses an admission of peoples basic right in society There are many ways to define the common good everyone has their own views and beliefs The good that is common between group A and B may not be the same as between group A and C it is ever changing I believe that common good ultimately comes down to having the greatest possible outcome for the largest number of people The more people that can benefit the better off society will be as a whole
