When we start to study the works of the great philosophers the immediate question we ask is are these men just voicing their opinions assumptions or are their thoughts based on already existing facts effectively creating an explanation from an assumption This allows us to consider the question that what is considered important about a philosophy is the assumptions not the explanations given Because without the assumption there can be no further discussionSo what is an assumption and explanation An assumption is a statement or belief opinion that is accepted as true or certain to happen but is without proof Explanations are a set of statements constructed to describe a set of facts which clarifies the causes context and consequences of these facts With this in mind I intend to look at the importance of philosophy and the assumptions created even though they are not proven as opposed to philosophy being based on explanations which are able to be validatedWhen philosophies are created they are essentially a set of unverified assumptions When the assumptions are proven ie have a factual context then they become explanations This arises when philosophers are attempting to describe their current world environment when the philosophy is developed and the theories they develop become a description of society at that point in time A good example of this is Platos Prescription theory and his assumption that an ideal society consisted of three classes the philosopher kings who had absolute political power the second class that executed the philosopher rulers requirements and the third class - farmers craftsmen and tradespeople who would produce material necessities Platos theory is an explanation about societys structure and each persons role as of 400 BC As centuries have passed this philosophy became more relevant because it reflected the European class system that existed until the 1900sMachiavellis Prince Philosophy also reflects the time period when it
