The ability to read and write is how the all-knowing Merriam-Webster would put it Thought of this way the concept of literacy is completely simplistic and understandable Literacy today in our culture is essential Texting facebooking e-mailing and reading the newspaper are all daily activities that require the use of literacy But we all know that six words can really not explain the true essence of literacy There is something more The purpose of literacy is simple like the purpose of a building But take a church for example There is a purpose and there is a meaning There is always a meaning assigned to a purpose The meaning of literacy is so complex Literacy is different for everyone because everyone has had different experiences and life styles Most people agree with this sentiment but one rarely realizes the necessity of understanding and acting upon this knowledgeI have no clue what you are saying The meaning of literacy on a personal level is quite unnerving Learning how to read is one thing but learning to comprehend is something completely different Each individual assigns a personal meaning to words and phrases based on personal experience This association of words can get to be extremely tangled For example every time I hear the phrase I am thinking its a sign or something similar I am reminded of a Postal Service song Then this song reminds me of a particular ex-girlfriend and a flood of mixed emotions Every human is like this We all associate meanings to words that could be meaningless to others My grandfather enjoyed playing a card game called hearts Now several years after he died I still get reminded of him if card games come up in conversation This is because I assigned meaning to a card game I made a connection between my grandfather and hearts There may be something said in this essay that brings back a thought and feeling
