The bystander effect occurs when the presence of others hinders an individual from intervening in an emergency situation Psychology Today 2013 The bystander effect is also called the Genovese Syndrome following the infamous 1964 murder of Kitty Genovese in Kew Gardens New York I have experienced a similar event of the bystander effect as the story of Kitty Genovese This similar event took place during the summer when I volunteered at The Hospital for Sick Children This is event has changed my life forever The factors that influenced my personal experience with the bystander effect were diffusion of responsibility social proof and situational ambiguity My personal experience with the bystander effect was influenced by diffusion of responsibility Diffusion of responsibility is a psychological phenomenon in which people are less likely to take action or feel a sense of responsibility in the presence of a large group of people Essentially in a large group of people people may feel that individual responsibility to intervene is lessened because it is shared by all of the onlookers Cherry 2012 For example while I walked to catch the subway in Kennedy Station I witnessed a young woman crying and being repeatedly slapped by her partner The man repeatedly yelled and cursed horrific names at the young woman There were people around who witness the incident and I the reason I decided not to get involved was because I believed the many other people around would take action so I would not need to My decision to not get involved was influenced by diffusion of responsibility because many people witnessed the incident I felt it was not my responsibility to take action Secondly my personal experience with the bystander effect was influenced by social proof Social proof is an influence by a group in a social situation that has an influence on a persons behaviour Social influence is that what makes us act the
