Topic 01 What is the Principle of Alternative Possibilities What is Frankfurts argument against it and how is his argument relevant to the debate between compatibilists and incompatibilists Next explain Widerkers objection to Frankfurts argument Is that objection successful Why and Why notFor a long time most philosophers whether compatibilists or incompatibilists have agreed that the principle of alternative possibilities PAP is valid The principle claims that a person is morally responsible for an action only if he or she could have acted differently However Frankfurt argued that PAP is false and that which brings one to do the action is not the same as the impossibility of doing otherwise Thus the importance for moral responsibility is related to the relevant choice motivation or action brought about and not whether the agent had alternative possibilities However Frankfurts argument against PAP came under attack from libertarian David Widerker Widerker argued that Frankfurts counterexample fails because the agent is not morally responsible from a libertarian viewpoint if the agent is in a circumstance that makes it impossible to act other than the agent has In this paper I will argue against Widerkers objection to Frankfurts attack on PAP by showing that libertarianism which relies on PAP is wrong such that a person still has a moral responsibility even if determinism is true and the person cannot do otherwiseFrankfurt challenged the principle by arguing that PAP is false and an agent is still morally responsible for his or her action despite the lack of alternative possibilities According to Frankfurt the importance for moral responsibility is the agents motivation in other words the agent makes a decision under his or her own steam Frankfurt argued that making an action impossible to avoid is not the same as bringing about the action performed Moreover he asserted that the circumstances an agent brings about to do the action are relevant to moral responsibility and the circumstances which make it impossible
