Garbage on the floor students rampaging through the halls food fights another couple suspensions for the day About 25 years ago this was an average day at Buffalo High School Students were rude uncontrollable and everything was a chaotic mess This was the case until Nick Miller came into the picture Al Frost former Assistant Principal of Buffalo Community Middle School met Miller at a conference in Bemidji and told him about a job opening as Principal at BHS Pardon my French but where the hell is Buffalo said Miller Frost told Miller about the small country town and talked Miller into applying for the job Even though Millers family didnt want to leave Bemidji Miller got the job and had no idea how But he took it and couldnt wait to bring what he knows to BHS I decided within my first year at Buffalo High School that we had to turn this school around said Miller So I told the Assistant Principals to pick three seniors that cause the most problems in our school I brought them into my office handed them each a garbage bag told them to take what you want go out the front door and nice known yaMiller knew this was a huge risk but did it anyway He never got any calls from parents and never saw the three students again He could see there were some severe discipline issues so Miller had to start at square one Building relationships between the teachers and students and relaxing the rules Miller had a drive intuition and most of all courage to get this school on track When I had to hire new teachers there were certain people I was looking for said Miller If they said I dont want to be liked I want to be respected I didnt hire you Students learn more from teachers they like said Miller It took Miller 5 years to build strong relationships
