Good afternoon teachers I am writing you today to discuss the rules and teaching practices that should be changed in high school English Department curriculum to better prepare students entering college The rules and practices that should be changed would be the scrutinizing of errors and the making of English Department rules uniform Below you will see the benefits and reasoning behind these claims to change the rules and practices for the benefit of students furthering their educationThroughout grammar school and proceeding all the way though high school students are required to take English Class In these English Classes we learn about grammar how to write proper essays and how to cite sources All these skills are necessary to advance there English knowledge but students who make a mistake are punished They are punished for their lack of knowledge of the mistake or poor proof reading which are both punished by taking points off the grade This style of punishment has discouraged and frustrated me over the last few semesters of High School English ClassIt has not frustrated me for the fact I have made a mistake because everyone makes mistakes It is for the fact that the foolish mistakes that do not alter my paper or story dramatically can have such a drastic effect on the final grade When reading a paper for purpose and an error makes you stop and think of what does that error mean is the only time when the error should be penalized or outlined due to the disturbance it has caused This strategy of editing papers is in agreeance with Joseph M Williams who is a former professor of the university of Chicago One article that Williams published was The Phenomenology of Error in this article Williams discuss on how to correct or mention errors to author Little does the reader know that Williams has purposely put 100 errors into his writing and teachers or students reading can
