My decision to continue my education was born of my lifes experiences and from my relationships with the people around me My education became increasingly important as I matured and interacted with the world around me As a college educated person I want to improve my critical thinking skills be more informed about the issues surrounding me and make a greater contribution in my community Although all this I feel could be accomplished to some degree without a college education I believe that the competencies and concepts learned through higher education could help me significantly to accomplish this I suppose growing up I never put too much value in the importance of education My early undervaluation of my academic progress was I believe influenced by a lack of expectation and enthusiasm for education within my immediate family Thats not to say that education wasnt important overall in my family With grandparents with doctoral degrees and aunts and uncles with significant educational backgrounds I was aware of the value of education but at such a young age and with a lack of nurturing education held no significant importance to me As I grew older and experienced the impact of education on ones ability to gain from education my valuation and perception of education increased The first and most significant turning point in my becoming a more education person was in the first grade Being raised in a single parent home with a parent that was at best inattentive and at worst neglectful did not prepare me well for my entrance into school Where most students my age were reading writing and doing simple math Id barely managed to learn to tell time As the youngest of five children what attention was spared was for the older children in hopes that they would share their wealth of knowledge My mother however misguided felt that as the only left handed child in the family she was
