No two people perceive the sensation of taste quite the same It ishighly likely that one person could taste a cup of soup and perceivethat soup as the best they have ever tasted while another person couldtaste the same soup and perceive it as the worst tasting soup and sendit back to the kitchen So many variables could affect how a personperceives the sensation of tasteOne of those variables is the number oftaste buds a person may have the number varies from person to person Some people have somewhere around 500 taste buds and others who arecalled supertasters can have twenty times that amount Bartoshuk1993 Our perception of the four primary tastes sweet sour saltyand bitter Ciccarelli White 2009 could be affected by the number oftaste buds an individual has For instance if the soup was had madewith a lot of salt it might over power the supertasters sensation ofsalty resulting in the perception of the soup being terrible and sentback to the kitchen The reciprocal of this would be the individualwith only 500 taste buds the amount of salt added might have been justthe perfect amount to make the individual perceive that this was nextbest thing to sliced breadAnother variable is the health of anindividual having a cold could affect the sense of smell which wouldlimit your sense of taste to the five basic tastes The sense of smellhelps enhance the sense of taste from the five basic tastes to thousandsof variations of the five Ciccarelli White 2009One last variableto note is that our experience can influence our sense of taste Experience gained through life can definitely alter the overallperception of taste Duncker 1938 We associate taste with colorenvironmental conditions and temperature which could influence theperception of the taste When two people disagree on how somethingtastes there is not a winner or a loser The perception of tastediffers from person to person based
