I believe that my book One Flew Over the Cuckoos Nest has been challenged for various reasons One reason why I think the book was banned was because of the adult language There are a lot of disrespectful words used in the novel that would not be acceptable in a school setting I think that teachers and administrators in the past would think that it would influence the students reading the novelIn the novel the nurse and Mr McMurphy were having a conversation I only count to twenty Mr McMurphy Hold on just one goddamned minute page 140 A lot of adult language is used negatively in this novel Mostly the adult language is used in the dialogue because of the personalities of the characters In Strongsville Ohio 1974 five residents sued the board of education to remove the novel from classrooms The residents called the novel pornographic and they also said that the novel glorifies criminal activity has a tendency to corrupt juveniles and contains descriptions of bestiality bizarre violence and torture dismemberment death and human elimination It was then removed from public schools in Randolph New York and Alton Oklahoma in 1975 The novel was on a required reading list in Westport Maine but then it was removed from it in 1977 In the St Anthony Idaho Freemont HIgh School it was banned in 1978 and even the instructor who assigned it was terminated from school During the 1980s the novel was challenged at the Merrimack New Hampshire High School and in Aberdeen Washington High School In the Aberdeen High School it was challenged because the book promotes secular humanism Although the school board voted to retain the title
