In 1933 President Franklin Roosevelt appointed William E Dodd ambassador to Germany Germany at that time was still under the restrictions of the Treaty of Versailles and is now going through more changes under the leadership of its newly appointed Chancellor Adolf Hitler Dodd was a type of person who would like to stay under the radar But he was no ones fool Dodd possessed a brain like no other He was a history professor at the University of Chicago fluent in German and adept at personal relationships and was always an observer of his surroundings Yet he suffered from the delusion that his assignment to Berlin would not only allow him to make his mark on the world it would also afford him the time to complete his book Old South But he would soon find out that in Germany he will deal with an unhappy living arrangement Nazis brutality and a rebellious daughter Accompanying Dodd to Berlin was his wife Mattie his son and his 24-year-old daughter named Martha She was five feet three inches tall blonde with blue eyes and a large smile She had a romantic imagination and a flirtatious manner and these had inflamed the passions of many me - Erik Larson At the time of the move to Germany Martha was technically married to a New York banker Bassett Roberts However due to the moving to Germany Martha and Bassett got separated in marriage which gave Martha freedom to do whatever she wanted The Dodd family settled in a four-story house across the street from Berlins Tiergarten which means animal garden or garden of the beasts In the 1930s it used to be a hunting preserve for royalty It consisted of 630 acres of trees walkways riding paths and statuary that spread west from the Brandenburg Gate to the wealthy residential and shopping district of Charlottenburg - Erik Larson Even closer to Dodds new home was
