To the closing days of the war during July 1944 from the first penetration of the Siegfried Line to the Nazis last desperate charge in the Battle of the Bulge Wilson fought in the thickest of the action helping take the small towns of northern France and Belgium building by building Of all the men and officers who started out in Company F of the 4th Infantry Division with him Wilson was the only one who finished In the end he felt not like a conqueror or a victor but an exhausted survivor left with nothing but his life and his emotions Wilson doesnt hide that everyone wasnt a hero during this war but Wilson was a brave young man thats why I consider Wilson a hero instead of a victimThere are rarely any insight stories ordinary soldiers who seen and been through it all while serving in the military which makes this book more interesting and especially for its honesty and its perspective on the battles of the times If You Survive is a story of one American Soldiers experiences during the last year of World War II thrown into the frontlines in Late June 1944 Second Lieutenant George Wilson 22nd Infantry Regiment US 4TH Infantry Division survived 8 months of near continuous combat through a combination of skill common sense and sheer luck His men were by and large young barely trained draftees thrown together randomly and taking horrendous casualties they often proved as dangerous to each other as the enemy Rejected by the Airborne Forces and US Marines on account of his Glasses Wilson eventually found himself drafted into the Regular Army aged just 21 much to his bewilderment he was chosen to become an officer Wilsons first experience of combat is just as vividly described the guilt at killing the enemy and loosing men under his command After fighting through the Normandy campaign Wilson saw further action in the Siegfried
