In high school writing assignments are to have a certain number of paragraphs with a certain number of main ideas In college however the high school specifications of writing are thrown out the window Writing anything from an essay term paper or research paper is vastly different and each type has to have certain college-level features For one the structure and pattern for each writing assignment changes per assignment Also every piece of info that is an outside source must be cited in a certain format Then one of the most important features of a college-level writing assignment would be procrastination Generally speaking every writing task that a person is assigned has a different structure that it needs to be done in One of the most stressful structures to students is the number of pages a writing task has to be A student can be reading the rubric and have no problem until the bullet point with the number of pages comes up and then the face of devastation appears Furthermore the main structures or patterns of college writing assignments are typically cause and effect compare and contrast definition argumentation and exemplification essays Each of these has a special purpose meaning they should be used at certain times with some being used more than others For example a comparison and contrast essay consists of comparing two ideas in one half of the paper while contrasting the ideas in the second half This pattern would be used when informing someone about the differences and similarities of a certain idea like if someone is trying to see if the police in Memphis have the same complaints about their jobs as the police in Philadelphia Kirszer Mandell 372 Then again some patterns are used together like the definition and exemplification patterns
