Los Angeles City College Counselor Mario Escalante was one of a few gang members who had many connections in college and achieve academically He was born in year 1976 and raised in Los Angeles A city most known for its beautiful weather and dangerous gangs Escalante joined a gang when he was a young kid in Lennox Middle School That year was his best experience because the gang he had joined treated him like a brother and like his own family the family that he was lacking It was the drug he sold that he was able to survive and have money in his pockets As a student he didnt know how to read or write It was in middle school where one teacher made him feel like if he cared about Escalantes work but after that teacher was gone he forgot about everything he learned He was unsuccessful from Leuzinger High School and didnt get to graduate He was a drop out Escalante was living without family in San Diego California He had no support from his family because they lived in Tijuana so he was forced to become a man at a young age and start to work Once he joined college he didnt let anything stop him He made many connections to whom he study with and councilors who motivated him to continue his education and not to forget the mentors to give him the extra push and believed in him Mario Escalante then became a successful student because he was using connections to survive all the challenges that came along his pathMario Escalante survived many challenges before he was able to get a good education One of the hardest challenges mentioned before was living without a family He had no support from his parents but yet he supported his mother by sending her little money every time he could His parents were separated which was why his parents live in
