In the 40 years Augustus Ceasar previous to 27 BC know as Octavian held power in Rome he was able to establish a firm foundation for emperors to come by changing laws and enacting still others Octavian beleaved firmly that Romian laws had proven to weak under the Roman Rebublic and that they needed a strong leader the Senate aproved and appointed him consul tribune and comander and cheif for life Then is when he gave himself the title Augustus meaning Majestic One Using this power he created jobs for the citizens and began to build magnificent public buildings throughout the empire He replaced pulican tax collectors with permanent government employees began to import grains from North Africa in order to aid in preventing further starvation amung the citizens and asuring the all Romans would be fed He also constructed new road systems connecting the empires citys and towns and rebuilt the ones that were in need of repair He also is noted to have left Proconsuls with no ability to exploit the provinces Holding power from 27 BC until AD 14 Perhaps the greatest accomplishment during the period was the start of the Pax Romana or Roman Peace which extended over a period of 200 years in which the only major problems occured during the years which new emperors came to power because though Augustus chose his own sucessor he did not create any law for the selection of future emperors Ceasar in his own words had found Rome a city of brick and left it a city of marble
