Compare and Contrast of A Rose for Emil and Eveline A womans role in society and family has constantly changed through out the years What was expected of a woman in the past has completely changed compared to what is expected from her by todays standards Stories from different time periods reflect this great difference yet there will always be that general stereotype of a woman Womens lives have been affected and afflicted by the expectations of a womans role in society and in the end the perception has caused a negative impact on their lives For example the women in the following stories A Rose for Emily and Eveline both reflect this negative impact and they show the results on how a womans role has impeded their normal growth as a woman The character Emily Grierson in the short story A Rose for Emily by William Faulkner was heavily affected in her later years of her life by the role which was played to her by her father Emilys mother died when Emily was still a young girl leaving her to be the woman figure in her fathers household Her father under the appearance of protection which is actually control chases away all of her suitors not because they are not good enough but so that he may keep her as his own personal housekeeper Faulkner gives a description of Emily and then says and about the eye sockets as you imagine a light house-keepers face ought to lookpg 73 As a result of living her life this way Emily was never able to form healthy relationships with men because of the way her father treated her After her fathers death Emilys lovers repeatedly left her Although she was a grown woman now she was unable to handle the relationships that another normal women would have In the end her emotions and feelings were so mixed up and misinterpreted that
