In modern times there are many diverse genres of literature in which individuals can choose to read from Almost every literary work includes four elements 1 characters 2 plot 3 theme or statement and 4 style A good writer always tries to balance these elements to create a unified work of art in which many find enjoyable to read Students in college enjoy reading the diverse genres of literature but sometimes find some literary work to be somewhat unentertaining and down right boring A particular literary work that was read such as JD Salingers The Catcher in The Rye are unentertaining because it was written to entertain an audience who seeks a naive protagonist pining for an ideal world This particular type of audience is often immature and lacks the educational background to desire literary works with realistic plots and everyday outcomes While other literary works such as To Kill a Mockingbird by Harper Lee posses great emotion human behavior and on a mature level with a realistic theme and plot which makes the four elements of this literary work more fulfilling to read An example that supports their dislike of the immature novel The Catcher in The Rye is an incident when the main character Holden goes to the local school He proceeds up a flight of stairs and comes across vulgar profanity written on the side of the stairwell on the wall He quickly wipes it off only to see the same profanity once again written on a different set of stairwells Although Holden wished to help children retain their innocence perpetually he realized he couldnt At this time he is basically hopeless after this and then realizes his dreams are unattainable While an example to support their liking of To Kill a Mockingbird is the main theme of prejudice which is extremely realistic Prejudice has caused the pain and suffering of people for many centuries Throughout this entire novel there
