The characters in The Epic of Gilgamesh and the Genesis story of the Garden of Eden both contain the perpetual values and character traits of greed for power mans inability to resist female temptation and mans need for companionship In The Epic of Gilgamesh this is shown in the characters of Enkidu and Gilgamesh In the Genesis story of the Garden of Eden this is displayed in the characters of Adam and Eve In The Epic of Gilgamesh Gilgamesh and Enkidu are characterized with values which exist in todays society The character Gilgamesh elucidates to us the sins of greed and pride which are very common to human beings today Gilgamesh is a very powerful and proud individual who abused his power No son is left with his father for Gilgamesh takes them all even the children yet the king should be a shepherd to his people His lust leaves no virgin to her lover neither the warriors daughter nor the wife of the noble The Epic of Gilgamesh1 In the character of Enkidu mans weakness to temptation by women is represented Enkidu could not resist the temptation of being seduced Right up to and including today men seem to lose their strength through the love or temptation of women Enkidu lost his physical strength Enkidus body was bound as though with a cord his knees gave way when he started to run his swiftness was gone The Epic of Gilgamesh2 The relationship between Gilgamesh and Enkidu also shows the important need for friendship in our lives Human beings need to have friendship for their emotional as well as physical well being Gilgamesh was tyrannical in ruling with power and Enkidu was an isolated creature in nature Enkidu desired a companion Enkidu longed for a comrade for one to understand his heart The Epic of Gilgamesh2 Enkidu was created to be acquainted with Gilgamesh to break Gilgameshs pride and to threaten his aristocratic ruling
