The story of Everyday Use by Alice Walker is significantly different from The Storm by Kate Chopin One of the reasons for their dissimilarities is that Everyday Use was written almost a century after the The Storm was published Another reason for their differences is that Alice Walker is a black female writer whereas Kate Chopin is white Their heritage and the eras that they lived in play a very big role on their writing It mainly effects their descriptions of characters and their personalities as well as the events that occur in the stories There is a major similarity between the two stories Calixta the female protagonist of The Storm and Mrs Johnson the main character of Everyday Use were both faced with making a crucial decision They both made their decisions by following their instincts When Mrs Johnsons daughter Dee had come back home for a visit to her mothers surprise she was completely transformed into a new person trying to get in touch with the traditions and culture of her people Dee had changed her name and her appearance and she was suddenly interested in her mothers house and possessions which she had always been scornful of Her attention was captured by two old handmade quilts pieced by Grandma Dee and quilted by Mrs Johnson and her sister known as Big Dee However these quilts have already been promised to her sister Maggie to be taken with her into her new marriage Dee was horrified and gasped like a bee had stung her Maggie cant appreciate these quilts she sa id Shed probably be backward enough to put them in to everyday useWalker 120 Although Maggie was intimidated enough to surrender the beloved quilts to Dee the mother felt a sudden surge of rebellion She had an instinct to give the quilts to the daughter that would appreciate them more So she snatched the quilts from Dee and gave them to
