Throughout history leaders have used various means to achieve the same ends Roosevelt and Wilson are prime examples of this fact Both were products of an age of reform Progressivism Both Presidents led America through an era of change and did so well However each man approached the task while incorporating his own individual values and character Yet although Roosevelt and Wilson differed greatly both were effective presidents Roosevelt and Wilson equally looked with disdain upon the labor and Populist movements both became conscious of the middle class that had always been the backbone of America society but was quickly losing its status of importance The nation was struck by an economic panic in the 1890s and both men decided to lead the nation on a course of reform and answer the cry of the middle class thus stabilizing Americas economy However Roosevelts and Wilsons different personalities led to a distinction in the nature of approaching the reforms Theodore Roosevelt was aggressive and dynamic He relished battles war and violence sparred with boxers and rode with cowboys and he was a big game hunter and a flamboyant soldier As such he took a more offensive approach to the reforms For example he did not attempt to appease business tycoons or circumvent any issues instead he directly attacked businessmen with income and inheritance taxes In doing so Roosevelt meant to pursue the enormous wealth of the upper-class families like the Rockefellers without concurrently taxing the middle class or poor Furthermore Roosevelt proposed campaign reform by suggesting a law that would prohibit corporations from contributing to political parties Thus he attempted to rid politics of the buying of votes done by the rich In order to effectively and aggressively influence middle-class reform Roosevelt incorporated his personality into his speeches He constantly vilified the the very rich with stirring language he denounced corruption political machines and atrocious working conditions Additionally Roosevelt slaughtered the beast of dishonesty in business
