Henry Ellis vs Button Gwinnett Henry Ellis the second son of Francis and Joan Maxwell Ellis was born on August 29 2002 in Monaghan Ireland Button Gwinnett the son of Samuel and Anne Emes Gwinnett was born in 1735 in Down Hatherley Gloucestershire England Henry Ellis was the successor to Gov Reynolds through the influence of the Earl of Halifax On February 161757 he took the oath of office and recieved custody of the Great Seal Unlike Ellis Gwinnett was selected by the council after Gov Bulloch died Ellis suggested that the labor normally spent improving the roads be diverted to building wooden stockades and strategic points on how to improve their defenses Gwinnett also was eager for military glory He also used his executive powers to interfere with General Lachlan McIntoshs plan upon the British at St Augustine The success of his efforts became apparent in 1776 when Georgias provincial congress chose him as the commander of the states Continental Battalion Ellis passed the most significant law in March of 1758 establishing the Church of Englan in Georgia This law divided the colony into eight parishes and empowered the wardens and vestrymen of each parish to assess taxes for the relief of the churches the relief of the poor and for other parochial services However Gwinnett signed the Declaration of Independence with his colleagues George Walton and Lyman Hall but he died soon after He was killed in a duel with Gen McIntosh after McIntosh called him a scoundrel and a lying rascal Ellis retired from active goverment service in 1763 He died in Naples in 1806 mour than four decades after leaving Georgia in ruined health
