Although many readers dont realize the connection between real people and fictional characters often writers use these real people as the epitome of their characters For example F Scott Fitzgerald wrote The Great Gatsby with a character based on Arnold Rothstein Rothstien became known as one of the most notorious gangsters of his time Not only admired among his peers Rothstien also captures the admiration of outsiders who had no partaking in this gangsters lifestyle Fitzgerald invents Meyer Wolfshiem a friend of Jay Gatsby to resemble Rothstien This is proven throughout the story using descriptions of the two men and references to the lifestyle and similar criminal activities of these two pivotal figures Because Wolfshiems character is modeled after Rothstien the two men have the same background Fitzgerald describes Wolfshiem as a small flat nosed JewGats 74 Arnold Rothstien was also Jewish Rothstein as well as Wolfshiem are both Jewish gangsters A very minuet detail to most this description fits for the time and age A period when the Jewish Mafia was a very big figure in criminal activity Rothstien and Wolfshiem like to spend big money in high risk games As well both of them seem to receive blame for the setting up of the 1919 Worlds Series Gatsby makes a major reference that Wolfshiem is a major gambler when he says Hes the man who fixed the Worlds Series back in 1919 which clearly shows a major link between Rothstein and Wolfshiem Gats 78 Rothstien became known for his dealings with gambling and the setting up of numerous other sporting events In the 1920s prohibition was in major affect Some even say its what the twentys were made of However having a part of prohibition had a very big risk to it unless you had the right connections Due to his connections Rothstien was going to move up in the standings of the crime movement he was to mastermind the beginning of the
