Death devastation an end to happiness - any of these can be used to describe either Finnys fall or the fall of the World Trade Center Finny was a prospering youth full of life and at the top of his game whose life was forever changed by a single accident In the same way America was a prospering nation on the brink of innovation until a fateful crash distilled fear and changed the attitude of society At first glance these two incidents seem unrelated however the specific purpose of this paper is to show the relationship between these two events and the impact felt by the people in each case In the novel A separate Peace by John Knowles Finnys fall serves as the climax of the novel The fall brings an end to the carefree days of summer and it ushers in the harsher winter session Before Finnys fall there is a sense of childhood innocence The boys still had a year before they would be eligible for the war and they took advantage of the leniency shown towards them From the Super Suicide Society of the Summer Session to Blitzball the entire summer is full of games and merriment Finny spends a portion of his summer getting himself into trouble and then inevitably escaping the punishment he should have received For instance when Mr Patch-Withers sees that Finny is wearing the school tie as a belt it seems that he will become very angry however seeing a way out Finny proceeds to explain that it the tie and shirt all ties together with what weve been talking about the bombing in central Europe because when you come right down to it the school is involved in everything that happens in the war thus relieving the situation and escaping any consequence During the time before Finnys fall it seems as though the fun will never end however after Finnys fall it does stop
