When analyzing the novels Editha by WD Howells and The Adventures of Huckleberry Finn by Mark Twain one must be able to compare and contrast while not giving prejudice over specific content Overall Editha exposed a quality of negativity by glorifying war and manipulating her beloved into an act that he was wholeheartedly against Huckleberry Finn however was fun-filled and on the borderline of childhood innocence in the romanticism portrayed toward the mighty Mississippi and the local populace of the time Both are well-written and emotionally stirring novels but in my humble opinion the positive narrative of Huck Finn was the more palatable reading of the two Huckleberry Finn gives rise to romance through the soliloquy of Hucks boyish narration and his colorful descriptions of life in the pre-Civil War south through the eyes of a child All was not perfect but there was usually a quick remedy for that which wasnt The author paints a picture of carefree lifestyle where the most challenging aspect of each day was how to escape the monotonous tasks placed before Huck by the dreaded Widow Douglas and her sister Miss Watson With nothing better to do with her time than create misery for Huck through the betterment of his manners and morality the Widow Douglas was the original protagonist in the novel While attempting to help with the manners Miss Watson also took an even more onerous role the spinster bent on the education of Huck These two in combination were enough to put any strong-willed boy on the run In Editha the original protagonist lay unlike Huck Finn in the title character of the novel Editha with her wartime ambitions for her fianc George Gearson pushed her own self-centered dreams ahead of Georges safety She could only imagine herself being the bride of a hero of some epic battle Never did it enter her mind that this was a goal of supreme ego and had nothing
