The Things They Carried vs A Clockwork Orange The two stories A Clockwork Orange and The Things They Carried both demonstrate Free Will and Grace In both stories groups of people do things in certain ways so that emotions can be distorted When men went to war in Vietnam their morals and lives were different from the rest of society In the story A Clockwork Orange Anthony Burgess expresses how the adolescent society of England has much different morals than the mature society In the story A Clockwork Orange Alex and his friends represent the adolescence of that time They show how it is possible to have total free will While not having any Grace This free will that they take advantage of ends up coming back to Alex by getting punished This expresses how one can not practice free will and not have any punishment for bad actions Alex gets caught and is part of a test When out of prison and allegedly cured of his evil it is seen that he still does not have grace His mind is just afraid of committing bad acts Alex doesnt truly experience this because he is seen doing the same acts he did in the beginning This shows that Free Will can given if your actions dont compromise someone elses free will Also to distort Alexs brain to thinking he was doing unmoral acts the nadsat language was used This distorted the action and in turn distorted the option of having grace This also took place in The Things They Carried Through going to war the soldiers were granted the ability to kill without consequence They saw it more as survival than doing bad Their free will was taken away by society They were forced to go to war by being drafted They also distorted this idea just to get by This is expressed in the actual items they carried Through having certain items
