Short stories are all similar Jack London Bernard Malamud and Ernest Hemingway are very different people lived in different eras and lived different lives However they all have something in common All three of these talented people are short-story writers The three short stories that will be compared and contrasted in setting characters conflicts and writing styles are To Build a Fire by Jack London The First Seven Years by Bernard Malamud and Old Man at the Bridge by Ernest Hemingway These three stories are very similar in their characters although written about different topics and by different authors Each story hasno more then three characters Although the three stories are different their characters all endure very simple and realistic conflicts Their personalities are also very simple In The First Seven Years the main character is Feld an old Shoemaker He seems to be very oblivious to the world however goodhearted in his ways He is old intelligent and at the same time extremely foolish His character reminds me of the main character in Londons To Build a Fire Although the main character in To Build a Fire remains nameless his personality is very distinct He is also a foolish man however his foolishness is different The nameless character is foolish for being voluntarily ignorant Feld however is naturally ignorant London describes his nameless character as quick and alert but lacking imagination However all London lets us know is that the character has red hair a beard a mustache and wore mittens and moccasins There are no other physical traits described Feld on the other hand is described as old and physically rusted This character directly contrasts mentally but is alike with one of the main characters in Old Man at the Bridge The old mans character remains nameless as well He is an old man who seems to have lost his mind sanity and energy However is very imaginative He believes that his
