In 17th and 18th century America Puritanism reigned supreme Puritanism was a religion formed as a response to the corrupt andincreasingly unholy manner in which the Anglican church of England wasbeing conducted As a result Puritans seeking more holy worship andlifestyle emigrated to the new American continent In Puritan Americaliterature was frequently used to express beliefs both inwardly and tocongregations One famous Puritan literary figure was Edward Taylor Hewas born in 1642 in England He later cam to America and was educatedhighly at Harvard He then became minister of Westfield MassachusettsToday however Edward Taylor is famous for his poetryCarson 1Another famous Puritan writer was Jonathan Edwards He was a theologianpreacher philosopher and missionary born 1703 in Connecticut Helike Taylor was highly educated receiving his education at YaleUniversity His best known writings are sermons-especially those fromthe Great Awakening time period- but he also wrote various pieces onhis philosophical thoughtsWainwright 1 Although Edwards and Taylorwrote in similar time periods about similar subjects their writingdiffers in their perception of God their motivation for writing and intheir general literary style Edward Taylor chooses God frequently if not always as the subject ofhis writings Edward Taylors God is benevolent loving and experiencedpersonally Taylor illustrates this through his anthology of poems Itis widely suspected that most if not all of his poems were never meantto be published His poems often focus on his personal love for God andhis thoughts on the great extent to which God and Taylor love eachother Also he recurrently asks God to help him improve himself Oneseries of poems written by Taylor is Meditations Merely their titleimplies that they contain Taylors personal thoughts In Meditation1 Taylor exclaims Oh Matchless Love Filling Heaven to the brimHe is referring here to the love God has for him In the same poemTaylor says In measure small In Manner Chilly SeeLord blow thecoal Thy Love Enflame in meeCarson Meditation 1 1 Again Taylormakes mention of the love God has
