Transcendentalists vs Dissenters In the 1800s transcendentalism was one way of belief Man and Nature were looked at as being good Ralph Waldo Emerson was one writer and Henry David Thoreau was another transcendentalist believer They used transcendentalism in their writings Transcendentalists believed that the basic truths or meaning of life are found beyond the limits of the five senses Also they thought that individuals ability to experience God firsthand like the puritans but unlike the puritans they thought that everyone could do this and not just and elect few Through intuition they thought to believe that that was where you know the existence of your own soul in relation to the world limited to your five senses They took a lot of their ideas from Romantic traditions They believe that you go to nature to meditate to find those basic truths One instance of this by Ralph Waldo Emerson in the excerpt from Nature In the woods too a man casts off his years In the woods is perpetual youth Within these plantations of God a decorum and sanctity reign In the woods we return to reason and faith There I feel that nothing can befall me in lifeno disgrace no calamity leaving me my eyes which nature cannot repair This poem illustrates the fundamental beliefs of the transcendentalists because it speaks to the necessity for man to embrace the spiritual qualities of nature The Dissenters anti-transcendentalists found contradictions with man and nature Nathaniel Hawthorne was one dissenter and Herman Melville was another They believed that man and evil were both good and evil Both recognized the revolutionary power of transcendentalist ideas They answered those ideas by finding in their disagreement a means of defining their own perceptions of life They used their own conclusions about human nature They believed that there was a mix of will and desire which is opposite of transcendentalism Examples of those
