Wole Soyinka and Joseph Conrad though from two very different parts of the world illustrate the oppression and terror of the people of Africa during the time of European domination Thus a Post- colonial theory is evident throughout the works of both authors Post-colonial theory can deal with the reading and writing of literature written in previously or currently colonized countries or literature written in colonizing countries which deals with colonization or colonized peoples Both authors convey the idea that with colonialism comes a dark reality for the future of the people and an inevitable futility of the whole movement Before we can explore the works of Wole Soyinka we must realize his motives or reasons for writing with such passion about colonialism One such way is through his autobiographical novel Ake The Childhood Years Throughout this novel Soyinka tells of his accounts with colonialism Joseph Conrad a Polish novelist deals with the very same issue of colonialism in his novel Heart of Darkness It is very easy for a reader to see Heart of Darkness as a depiction of and an attack upon colonialism in general and more specifically the particularly brutal form colonialism took in the Belgian Congo The whole story of this book was manifested out of Conrads own experiences in the Congo in 1890 Conrad tells his story through the Character of Marlow who deals with the horrible truth he discovers in the heart of the jungle Conrad just like Wole Soyinka experienced being colonized as a young boy in Poland under Russian occupation He also witnessed the affects of colonialism upon a colonizer while he commanded a river steamer in the Dutch Congo As stated before he relays these experiences through the eyes of his character Marlow who is a riverboat captain as well Conrad attacks colonialism directly throughout the book Obvious statements are made of the horrors of colonialism One example is Marlow and his
