Until the mid 1980s snowboarding was basically unheard of at major ski resorts and therefore it was not allowed Because it was an unknown sport that which only a handful of people understood there was much fear and concern on the part of traditional skiers resulting in an alarming conflict between both sides As many of the very first snowboarders will recall even the sports name was often changed by people who did not know what it was sometimes to become names like ski-boarding mono-boarding board-skiing and no doubt there have been many others One of the reasons that snowboarding was not accepted for many years as a sport was that it was considered a fad similar to skateboarding in that it would not last as a sport popular with the higher classes When something different comes along and challenges the existence of a major sport such as skiing there is bound to be a conflict So what makes snowboarding so different As snowboarding was created it was not as a mode of transport but as an art form it has evolved as a way of freedom personality and fun It is something very different from the normality of skiing and has added excitement and endless possibilities Therefore depending on whether an alpine or freestyle snowboarder snowboarders will use the available terrain to its limits The groomed slopes are not simply a road for reaching the bottom of the mountain they are the paths of fun and excitement for snowboarders everywhere Freestyle snowboarders will use all the available banks and jumps on the slopes as well as the powder and other closed runs and the alpine boarders will use the groomed slopes for carving and incredible speeds Snowboarders do have a problem with the flatter parts of slopes as they are not equipped with poles to push themselves along so they try to stay away from these sections whenever possible Large mogul fields are also
