Spirits of the dead by Edgar Allen Poe is a compilation of 5 small verses or stanzas to make one whole poem The title is self explanatory in that it is about lost souls or spirits of the dead Each stanza takes you through another setting of the lost souls Poe is referring to How they live where they live what they are doing and even their purpose It is very deep and thinkative poem It starts off with the funeral at the cemetery they are being laid to rest at The soul staring down at its grave not to be apart of the crowd but alone It travels on knowing that it does not belong there any more It travels far and joins the rest of the souls to walk amongst the earth overshadowing it Then it tells about the spirits in the heavens peering down on the mortals glaring down burning into the mortals trying to be what was They all realize they will never leave but will be forever on this earth and in the heavens to watch and stare Only to be heard and felt in the mists and the winds by the mortals to leave them with mysteries There was a lot of deep and clear imagery in this poem and in all of his poems for that matter Poe goes great lengths to place an image in his writing to let you see his visions that he sees when he writes This is very alluring trait in his poem that cause me to read them I can see what he sees when read them Personification is used a lot as well in his poems He brings inanimate objects to life with ease I can actually see what he is writing about when he uses personification come to life before my eyes His settings are incredible Going from land to sea and from earth to the heavens
