FOUR DIFFERENT APPROACHES TO ART Wolfgang Laib with his modern sculptures catches the viewer attention to look art differently That is because that he uses very natural but extremely time consuming materials to deal which also serve his concepts that impermanence and the moment In addition his simple sculptures carry the mystical rituals of the east create the theatricality of Minimalism His attention to simplicity starts with moving to a modernist glass house in the middle of a vast meadow surrounded by forest His familys pared-down style is also reflected in the works the Laibs slept on futons and ate their vegetarian meals sitting on the floor This extreme simplicity and orientation to the floor would later become important elements in Laibs work1 Relating to this effect there is another thing determines his materials The placement of his house allows him to collect natural substances like pine dandelion and hazelnut pollens and also beeswax stone marble milk and boulder The shapes of the sculptures and the way of exhibiting them are very close to Minimalist sculptures He uses modest and simple shapes However Laibs theatricality in his works is another issue The spectators come into his works easily because of his universal themes like in the first Brahamanda and his use of atmosphere in the work Somewhere Else The beeswax infuses the containing spaces with a rich warm fragrance that becomes almost overwhelming when one enters Somewhere Else it is a short corridor narrow and high-ceilinged such as might be found under an Egyptian pyramid The atmosphere is closed the illumination provided by a single bare bulb is mostly absorbed by the amber beeswax heightening the eerie effect2 According to his works there are extreme naturalism and purity more than simplicity In the form they are simple but together with the concept and his hard challenge to shape the substances and materials that are perishable and ephemeral they need more than
