Thurgood Leader Thurgood Marshall is a famous African-American lawyer who fought for our civil rights He is a hero to African Americans and may be an outlaw to others He was born July 2 1908 in Baltimore Maryland His parents are William and Norma Marshall In 1909 when Thurgood was a baby the family lived in New York but when he was 6 years old the family moved back to Baltimore Thurgood grew up in a segregated city Thurgoods father taught him to stand up for himself Thurgood stood up to a racial insult from a white man He hit the man and ended up in jail But Thurgoods father was proud of him for standing up for his rights In 1925 Thurgood went to a Black high school it was Frederick Douglass High One day Thurgood was sent to detention and the teacher had him sit down and read the United States constitution In 1929 Thurgood got married to a girl named Buster In 1935 Thurgood tried to get into the University of Marylands law school but could not get in because he was Black Instead he went to Howard Universitys law school Thurgood was happy to be in law school In 1936 when Thurgood was in the NAACP he was working in the national headquarters in New York In 1941 Thurgood got a call from Oklahoma about some one accused of killing 3 whites In court Thurgood lost the case White people started burning down the houses of Black people When Thurgood left the city he got pulled over by some white men The men were going to hang him but they did not because they saw some more Black men watching In 1944 Dr Smith wanted to vote but he could not because officials said
