Equal Employment Opportunity In the Workplace These days in every workplace in Australia employees have many rights One of these is the right not to be discriminated against There are many forms of discrimination and they apply to different sorts of people and circumstances Whether it be racial sexual cultural age or disability that is being discriminated against there are Equal employment opportunity policies that apply to all forms of discrimination and in all workplaces across Australia Discrimination can be divided into two categories Direct Discrimination and In-direct Discrimination Direct Discrimination is discrimination because of a some ones particular personal attribute such as Age or race For example a person may be thought to be too old for the job or the employer doesnt like a certain race so he doesnt hire a person from that racial background Indirect Discrimination Occurs as a result of policies or regulations made that unintentionally discriminate against people with certain attributes eg a workplace will not hire people over a certain weight or height to work there The law states that that an employee should always be employed or promoted for hisher ability to perform certain tasks assigned to them irrespective of their personal attributes The first action to stop discrimination in the workplaces of Australia was made by women in1972 The Women electoral lobby was formed for the specific purpose of making the demands of the Womens movement known to the Federal government This was the first of a number of acts passed relating to discrimination in the workplace In 1973 the first Women adviser to the Prime Minister was appointed The Federal Government became a signatory bunk one stm crew bunk one stm crew brissie in the International Convention for the elimination of all forms of Discrimination against women then in 1975 the first Anti-Discrimination legislation was passed The Racial Discrimination Act of 1975 In 1984 the Sexual Discrimination act was passed and
