Due to the racial issues that took place in Birmingham Alabama in 1963 the Public Statement by eight Alabama ClergyMen was written in response to demonstrations led in part by Dr Martin Luther King Jrcarpenter at al 631 The eight Clergymen also stated their names religious rankings and education within in the public statement carpenter at al 631 The public statement was written and released while Dr King was in jail in Birmingham Alabama Dr King was informed of this public statement by his counterparts and was not directly informed or addressed by the eight Clergymen of Birmingham Alabama After reading the statement Dr King whom usually never responds to criticism of his work deemed it necessary to write his response to the charges that lain upon him whilst coming to the aid of his affiliates in Alabama King 719 Dr King was deprived of simple requests such as a pen and paper whilst confined in the Birmingham jail so he begin to draft his response to the charges on the borders of a newspaper he had on hand The eight Clergymen had charged Dr King of misconduct after the demonstrations and boycotts had left Birmingham in peril In the public statement the Clergymen stated that they were confronted by a series of demonstrations by some of our Negro citizens directed and led in part by outsiders And they recognize the natural impatience of people who feel that their hopes are slow in being realized But we are convinced that these demonstrations are unwise and untimely carpenter at al 631 In response Dr King said I couldnt sit idly by in Atlanta and not be concerned about what happens in Birmingham Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere We are caught in an inescapable network of mutuality tied in a single garment of destiny Whatever affects one directly affects all indirectly Never again can we afford to live with the
