Suicide among Adolescents In general suicide is attemptedcompleted by persons who are experiencing intense psychological pain in response to unmet needs Lacking the skills and the resources to cope with this pain they use suicide as the only viable solution to end their suffering Due to the prevalence of the attempted and completed suicides it is not surprising that suicide is the most frequent crisis situation encountered by mental health professionals Paulson Worth 2002 A huge crisis exists among adolescents in American society In 2000 29350 individuals completed suicide thats 800 people each day one person approximately every 18 minutes Of those 29350 individuals 2994 were adolescents between 15 and 24 years of age McIntosh 2000 concludes that it is known that Suicide is the 11th leading cause of death in the US it is the 3rd leading causes of death for youth Youths have the second highest rate of completed suicide for every 100-200 young people who attempt suicide one successfully completes the act About 104 adolescents complete suicide each day which is one young person every 2 hours and 12 minutes Suicide rates for those 15-19 years old increased 11 between 1980 and 1997 Suicide rates for those between the ages of 10-14 however increased 99 between 1980 and 1997 Both age groups have shown small declines in rates in the past two years There are a plethora of warning signs coupled with risk factors that a teen demonstrates throughout the various stages of suicidal thought If and when we do see someone exhibit such warning signs one of many solutions can be counseling Suicide is the third leading killer among teenagers SAVE 1996 and can be committed for a number of reasons Anyone delving on thoughts of suicide should be empathically talked to or should be taken to seek professional help A few signs include depression disassociation antisocial behavior and lack of achievement Psychological problems
