As I believe many youths do I began to question the morality of society All around me through the media and news especially I encountered the faces of horror-stricken children starving and dying in war drained countries murders rapes and terrorism However people still work tediously to preserve the message that hope is not lost in this world we live in and that many good things still occur This was the message I began to doubt I wasnt simply averting my eyes from the good being done because especially after the 9-11 attacks there has been plenty of that but I was questioning if society was just so corrupt that the good being done wasnt enough Since as long as I can remember the idea of one person making a difference has been pressed upon me however I didnt really see that happening anywhere I of course have heard the success stories of individuals starting foundations and charities and changing the lives of hundreds yet this seemed to pale in the face of so many people still not being helped I truly felt as if doing service was just a poor attempt at building peoples self esteem that our society seems overly obsessed with as well However in light of one day in the city of Washington DC my whole view has changed I went to the city on a frigid gray day in October to celebrate my friends sixteenth birthday My group of friends fun had for the most part disintegrated by the time we reached Capitol Hill and was replaced with anger and frustration We were all at our wits end when a homeless man approached us and played a birthday song for my friend with his harmonica upon hearing us comment on it It completely changed my friends attitude and her smile was contagious It improved our time together and affected others at the restaurant we ate at and then
