Jesus The Liberator The wonders of the life and death of Jesus have inspired many to follow in his footsteps This is especially true in the case of oppressed people all over the world In Jesus Christ they find the wisdom and love that helps them to continue their fight for rights they know God wants them to have The small Central American country of El Salvador was home to many of these oppressed innocent people The poor people of El Salvador were deprived of their basic rights the right to vote the right to live and even the right to worship freely Similarly the poor people of Jesus time were also oppressed taken into slavery robbed of their land and hungry These suffering people found courage in the lives of Jesus and Father Romero Jesus and Romero came to the aid of their people giving them spiritual strength and leadership situating themselves among the poor and oppressed In order to do this they both diverged from the order of the church by confronting the various religious leaders of their time and challenging them to truly practice their religion instead of preaching it to others and reminding them that the mission of the Church is to identify with the poor This often upset many of the church leaders At times the lives of both these great men were in danger and although they both feared for their own pain they faced these dangers with faith and never retaliated their anger with violence Even when people from Romeros congregation were brutally murdered Romero proclaimed his love for their murderers and asked for their repentance from their sins similar to the way Jesus said to love thy enemy Jesus and Romero were beacons of inspiration and renewed faith and power in God When the anger of the military of El Salvador became to great and the violence
