It is a rare and wondrous phenomenon when one is able to completely wipe his or her mind clean of any thoughts worries or preoccupations to forget the existence of reality and to lose oneself completely In a moment of pure unadulterated bliss there is no English paper to finish no eight-hour work shift the next day It is total liberation and it can be felt in no other place than Bass Lake Indiana found nestled between corn and mint fields twenty miles east of the middle-of-nowhere To many it is a speck on a map To me it is the best place on earthWhat began as a few trips to the trailer park and private beach every summer has turned into a home away from home for me and my two sisters There is nothing we look forward to more than packing up the car with swim suits shorts towels and enough sunblock and Diet Coke to last us weeks heading out on that familiar three hour drive and pulling up to the cottage my grandparents have owned since 1971 Stumbling out of the van a little carsick but no worse for wear we will take in our surroundings and breathe a sigh of relief The lake with the waves crashing on the muddy shore the cottage with its cracking paint job and the family waiting inside it are home to us they and all their perfect imperfections The morning usually brings a little rain and low temperatures but we have never let that stop us My cousins my sisters and I will spend an hour or more coaxing my father off the sofa and behind the wheel of the familys 1979 Correct Craft Ski Nautique As soon as we hear the engine sputter to life and watch the boat drift slowly away from shore with us and our inner tubes in tow we know our weekend has begun We will smile knowing we
