I think Cather uses the man which Alexandra fantasizes about while she is at peaceful rest to represent the land the Genius of the Divide Alexandra had probably felt this deep down in her heart since she had such a distinct and unique relationship with the land Using the strong being as a representation of the land emphasizes the fact that the land is an important character in the novel and that Alexandra felt as if it were a dear friend to her which personifies the land in the novel Her frequent fantasies of a man who resembles a mythical corn god demonstrate her connection to the land and separation from conventional society The land is seen as a person only to Alexandra because she is the only character who actually understands the land and cares for it as she cares for someone very close and dear to her someone towards whom she feels love and yearning In the novel there is a lack of faith in the potential for romance and passion in several relationships for example the marriage between Signa and Nelse Jensen is an unhappy union The relationship between Emil Bergson and Marie Shabata is a hopeless one that has no potential of prospering safely and innocently-without the risking of their lives Carl and Alexandra do not seem to have a romantic relationship but rather a friendly and mutual bond against loneliness The only true happy romantic relationship in the novel is that of Amedee and Angelique Chevaliers marriage but that is soon destroyed by the death of Amedee This reveals the barricade to true heterosexual love in the novel The only true relationship-the one that is not destroyed-is the one between Alexandra and the Land She always accepted the land through all its conditions whether it was rich and prosperous or failing and unsuccessful Alexandra never gave up hope on the Land and therefore she is the only one
