Minority Sami The Sami population is populated in a broad belt going over north of Norway Sweden and Finland there are also some Sami populated in Russia The largest part of them live in Norway there are several different estimates but according to the latest numbers in a Norwegian newspaper it is around 25000 Sami living in Norway the same week the British newspaper Guardian weekly estimated it to be 50000 the double anyhow there is a lot of confusion concerning the Sami people also in Norway for instance its often assumed that all Sami are making a living of reindeer up north in Norway That is not the case there are mainly three groups forestsami seasami and the reindeer tundrasami in Norway these are separate groups with own languages there are 9 different languages existing in fact these are called dialects in the establishment in Scandinavia but the differences are in fact larger than between Norwegian and Swedish whish are regarded as separate languages furthermore a larger part is populated in Oslo the capital referred to as the largest Sami colony by themselves jokingly The Sami was the first ethnic group populating Norway and can be called the native Norwegians similarly to Americas Indians or Australias Aboriginals this however was earlier denied and discussed by Norwegian historians but recently this has become the more established assumption By 1900 the Sami had officially ceased to exist they were forced into integration their language and traditional singing joik was forbidden similar to the case of the Kurdish minority in Turkey According to public school law everyone had to send their children to school so 7 years old were taken from their parents and taken to boarding schools the Samis lived in isolated places far away from schools and civilization most of todays Samis are populated in the county Finnmark the most thinly populated area in Europe There they were taught Norwegian and
