The Gothic Cinderella Romanticism a form of literature that tells about the unusual and adventurous aspects of life with particular freedom of form and expression Fairytales like Cinderella accurately define the ideals of romanticism In romanticism the protagonists always end up happily ever after and the antagonists are always punished Real life though is considerably different Romantic realism or Gothic Romance is literature that pictures romance in its purest form along with all of its hardships and Jane Eyre by Charlotte Bront is a excellent example of this In Jane Eyre Bront uses the various techniques of Gothic Romance to enhance and fully develop her novel First a well-built theme that thoroughly enhances the novel is that of birds The reader first witnesses Janes fascination when she reads Bewicks History of British Birds as a child She reads of death-white realms and the solitary rocks and promontories of sea-fowl 8 Through this the reader quickly sees how Jane identifies with the bird for her it is a form of escape She wants to soar independently like a bird flying above the toils of every day life Additionally the narrator talks of feeding birds crumbs 308 This is affirmed a few times within this novel and perhaps through this Bront is telling the readers that the idea of escape is no more than a fantasy because one has no potential of escape when one must return for necessary sustenance Also Bront indicates the poor nutrition at Lowood through a bird The girls at Lowood sat like a little hungry robin 71 This is significant because it strengthens the link between Jane and the birds due to their resemblance Hence this theme enhances the plot of the novel through its symbolism yet in comparison to the Gothic settings it is only the wrist bone of the plot while the settings are the back bone Gothic settings the most influential part of Jane Eyres
