A History and Legacy of the Civil Rights Movement in the United States

This is an essay about the civil rights movement. The author details the importance of African Americans having equal rights, what has occurred to accomplish this and work that has yet to be done. The civil rights movement helped overturn the court case Plessy v. Ferguson that ruled that segregation was legal. Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka overturned this, ruling that segregation was unconstitutional based on the 14th Amendment. Despite segregation no longer being legal and the Civil Rights Act of 1965 being created to overcome Jim Crow laws, the author states that African Americans do not earn incomes equal to White people.
