HISTORY OF BASKETBALL Dr James Naismith is known world-wide as the inventor of Basketball He was born in 1861 in Ramsay township near Almonte Ontario Canada At the YMCA Training School in Springfield Massachusetts in 1891 the sport known as basketball was born Naismith was faced with the problem of finding a sport which was right for playing inside during the Massachusetts winter Naismith wanted to create a game of skill for the students instead of one that uses only strength He needed a game that could be played indoors in a small space The first game was played with a soccer ball and two peach baskets used as baskets The early game suffered from some problems The ball had to be retrieved from the basket with a stepladder and any number of players up to forty could play the game Somebody then came up with the idea of knocking the bottoms out of the peach baskets thus having the soccer ball fall through the basket In 1897 a norm had been established that allowed only five people to a side In 1898 basketball started to grow in popularity The first professional league was founded in 1898 and the first collegiate association was formed in 1902 Women started taking up the game before the turn of the twentieth century With basketball growing in popularity improvements had to be made A metal hoop was introduced in 1893 and backboards were installed to prevent spectators from interfering with the players The soccer balls that were originally used were replaced by regulation basketballs As society evolved so did basketball into the fast high tech above-the-rim sport that has captured worldwide affection Basketball was introduced at the Berlin Olympics in 1936 In 1949 the National Basketball Association NBA was formed The NBA offered us on-court champions business enterprises and even its shrine the NBA
