In the late 1700s the French Revolution was considered to be one of many events that had shaped the life liberty and fraternity of the modern western society Heyes 1953 p 572 During 1789 to 1799 the many political and social ideals instilled by the Revolution was in risk of being toppled by poor governing Ideals such as equal treatment under the law centralization of the government elimination of feudal rights religious tolerance and careers open to talent were still not fixed into the state Heyes 1953 p 572 Soon after the Revolution Napoleon Bonaparte one of historys most controversial figures took up the challenge to lead France into glory again Some believed he would discard the old Revolutionary ways but throughout his rule he proved to nurture its valued principles Through his establishments and successes Napoleon was an evident saviour of the Revolution Napoleon established the rights of the individual and equality under the law Prior to the French Revolution social status was more influencial than the individual in French society To counter these conservative ideas influenced by the bourbon monarchy Napoleon introduces his Napoleonic code in 1804 Haberman 1987 p 70 Along with it he retains the Revolutionary idea that all men are created equal He further implements this idea by creating the Legion of Honour to recognize those with merit and ability Almost immediately important positions in society were taken by men in all walks of life This showed that everyone was seen as having equal potential Heyes 1953 p 573 Everyone was given equal treatment under the law and the old feudal ways of judging by class became non-existent If it were not for Napoleons establishment revolutionary ideas such as equality and individualism would just be another fleeting idea Napoleon further preserves the beliefs of the Revolution by allowing the freedom of religion For ten long years France had undergone political and religious conflict that created much Napoleon the Saviour
