Cold War Even before the end of World War II Stalin Churchill and Roosevelt had agreed that when the war ended the frontiers of Poland should be changed and that Germany should be divided into zones of occupation The Russians should also be able to count on friendly relations with the Eastern European countries All of these decisions were to cause future trouble between the Soviet Union and the West The Soviets managed to keep control of Eastern Europe in three ways First of all they made sure that the communist parties gained control of the East European governments Then large numbers of Soviet troops arrived in all of the East European countries Also to stop interference from the outside few visitors were allowed into the USSR This was called the Iron Curtain The Cold War began as two superpowers the US and the Soviet Union tried to win over struggling third world nations through political influence and economic aid Through the fifties and sixties both sides expanded their military presence worldwide and continued to stockpile nuclear weapons There was hatred fear and suspicion between the two countries for many years Luckily for the whole world however they only hurled insults at each other not missiles Near the end of World War II Berlin was damaged very heavily The US 8th Air Force division bombed during the day and the British Royal Air Force by night The USSR did the final damage Everything was demolished and there was very little food By spring 1948 the division of Europe into two rival camps was almost complete except in Germany and Berlin Here Britain France the US and the USSR each governed a separate sector The arrangements to divide Berlin into four sectors were intended to be temporary but the Soviets and the West could not agree on a permanent solution Because of all the damage done by the Germans to
