The Ku Klux Klan originated in 1865 from the white Southern anger over the Civil War defeat and the Reconstruction that followed Northerners saw it as a way that the Klan could win through terrorism what they lost on the battlefield Soon this Klan became the hooded legion whose sacred task was to fulfill the Southern dream This dream was the old South would live again People started to believe in this Klan and their ideals which would ultimately restore the white supremacy to the South The end of the war in 1865 between the states marked the beginning of a terrible time of trouble for the white citizens who remained loyal to the southern states This infamous chapter of American History is known as the Reconstruction period and also as Black Reconstruction The conditions in the South added fears and frustrations to the Southerners The white Southerners had to deal with the losses of life property and in their eyes honor The Ku Klux Klan originated in Pulaski Tennessee nearby the Alabama border It all started when six young Confederate veterans decided to form a social club on a December evening in 1865 A week later they reassembled and were full of ideas for their new society The members came up with different names for the ranks that they received They decided that the head of the group would be called Grand Cyclops His assistant was the Grand Magi there was a Grand Turk to greet all candidates for admission a Grand Scribe to act as a secretary Night Hawks for messengers and a Lictor to be the guard Any new members would be called Ghouls The group was determined to come up with an unusual and mysterious name for the society Richard R Reed suggested the word kuklos coming from the Greek background In the English vocabulary the word represents a circle or cycle Another member Captain John B Kennedy
